php5

Posted in 252mc Digital Media by riajoynes on January 18, 2011

We will be working a lot this term with these programming languages, so I have decided to learn a little bit more about these platforms.

php5 is a scripting language which is basically used in relation to live dynamic sites, that are constantly being updated – like news sites social networking sites, e.g facebook, twitter and blogs. Because we are installing our blogs to our site, it is important that our hosting holds php5 capabilities. A php code is embedded into the original html coding which will be read by the web server, which will generate the web document.

And don’t ignore the letters in the post.

So a new term, a new module – and so far it isn’t running smoothly. Our digital media module so far appears to be a lot of work. To begin with we needed to make sure we have to correct web hosting, which included php5 and mySQL (which i’m sure i will learn a lot more about these programming stuff later).

So I already had web space with one.com, and I had been receiving no end of letters and stuff in the post about renewing my account. But being foolish and naive, i decided to just put these to one side, assuming that they will automatically cancel my subscription. But you should never assume, because when you do, you make an ass out of u & me.

So I go to move my domain name to a different web hosting company, visn.com, when i find out that i am actually still being billed by one.com, even after emailing them to tell them i do not wish to have any further hosting, and receiving a response by them. I then continue to find out even better information, that my debt has now actually been handed over to another company, Blackwater Debt Collecting Agency. Brilliant, so the start to the term has gone even smoother.

So yes, as pathetic as it sounds, I now owe £36 to a debt collecting agency. I am mostly angry about the lack of correspondence to inform me of this decision, so I decided to research further into the company, to find if any previous one.com clients have had the same problem, and google didn’t fail me. Several others, ranging from 16 year olds to established web developers have had the same problem, and at the end of the day I have learnt these valuable lessons:

  • never ignore correspondence
  • if i was to cancel my one.com subsciption i should apparently do so well in advanced. They actually need to have received the letter 35 days in advanced, so i will be posting mine 10 weeks before.
  • research complaints and company history before signing up to unknown web hosts

Also I wont be moving my domain name over until the end of this year, as I will not pay the 36£ to one.com in addition to the 46£ visn.com hosting fees.

Rant over.
